How Au Pair Arrangements Work in Canada
Follow five steps to plan an au pair arrangement: define the role, check work rights, interview, agree on terms and prepare the first week.
1. Define the arrangement
Choose a city, a realistic start window and the hours of childcare required. Decide whether living together suits both the family and the candidate.
2. Check the candidate’s starting point
For someone already in Canada, inspect their work rights and childcare restrictions. For an international candidate, assess the appropriate immigration route before setting a firm arrival date. A family agreement does not create immigration permission.
3. Interview and verify
Compare experience, references, communication and expectations. Discuss practical situations, not just a biography. Record what screening was actually completed and what remains outstanding.
4. Put the arrangement in writing
Agree on paid hours, wages, childcare tasks, rest, accommodation, transport, expenses and notice. Check provincial requirements before signing.
5. Prepare the first week
Introduce school contacts, emergency plans, allergies, keys and household routines. Arrange a first-week review and a regular conversation afterwards. Keep backup childcare available.
